Our Unexpected Spheres of Influence

« Back to blog home

A new year is well underway, and we are all getting into new patterns for a fresh start. Or, at least that is what most of us intend to do. As the new year gets underway, it is a great time to work on the stories we want to leave our children and grandchildren, or, perhaps, for the people in our sphere of influence. We are all more influential than we might realize at first glance. Here is a little story to illustrate this point.

When I was a young child, my family had moved to a new town for my father’s job as the academic dean at Wayland Baptist College. We quickly joined First Baptist Church, Plainview, Texas, and got into the general swing of college life, church activities, and school responsibilities. My mother was a high school English teacher, and my brother and I were in elementary school.

In getting ready for a school picture, a lady had come over to help get me ready. I remember she brushed my hair, spraying to get my curls to stay in place. As she sprayed, she covered my face, telling me that my hair would remain in place, but my face needed to be ready to smile quickly. When she said that I was pretty and had a lovely smile, my six-year-old mind was thrilled. I carried that sweet sentiment for years and years. I am sure she would not have remembered paying me a compliment, but I never forgot and replayed that compliment in my head over and over again.

Now, do not think I didn’t hear such comments from my parents because I did. But, Mrs. Bishop’s words made a huge difference in my developing years. Just think, without even realizing it, she was influential in my life. Through the decades since then, I have tried to encourage young people similarly.

This little story just shows how much of a difference we can make in another person’s life, even without thinking about it. We all have short stories like this to share with others.

Your stories can bear fruit in the life of someone else, even if you don’t think you have much of anything to say. Just remember such a seemingly insignificant event in your own life and begin right there with a unique story for 2018. Suddenly, you are on your way to writing your personal story.

Remember…when you are ready to tell your story…we are here to help!
